Before you Buy |

What
should I do before I purchase
MessengerLAN?
You should download the free Trial
version. It allows you to see all the
features of MessengerLAN in action and
also see if it meets your needs .
Why should I use MessengerLAN for
internal communication in my company?
MessengerLAN delivers fast and secure lan
messaging without requiring Internet
access. Its local network design and lack
of executable attachments virtually
eliminate unwanted messages commonly
known as spam or the possibility of
viruses using the software as a method of
propagation. Since your employees won't
have to deal with spam and virus dangers,
their productivity can be dramatically
increased.
What is the difference between
the Trial and the Full version?
The Trial version gives you a chance to
try all the features that are present in
the Full version of MessengerLAN. Nothing
is removed or disabled. If you don't see
a certain feature in the Trial version,
you won't find it in the Full version
either. However, the Trial version will
only work for 20 days and it only allows
up to 3 online users at the same time.
Once the Trial period is over, you must
purchase the appropriate number of
licenses to continue using the software.
Does MessengerLAN require
Internet access?
No! MessengerLAN works on any
TCP/IP-based local area network and
doesn't require Internet access.
Moreover, if some of your employees use
email strictly for internal
communication, their Internet access can
be removed once you install MessengerLAN
on their workstations.
We have less than 3 computers on
our network. Can we purchase a smaller
license package?
No. The 3-workstation license package is
the smallest one we sell. That is the
package you should purchase even if you
will be using MessengerLAN on less than 3
computers. |

You don't have to add them. MessengerLAN

are currently running MessengerLAN on
their computers. Everyone who has
MessengerLAN installed and running will
appear on the recipients list
automatically.
Computers turned on, but not running
MessengerLAN will also be displayed (with

Troubleshooting |
| |
What
changes do I make to my firewall or
router to enable MessengerLAN?
In most of the cases, none. If you are
experiencing problems seeing other
MessengerLAN users in your 'User' list,
it may be that there is a firewall or
other device blocking the required port
between the two computers.
How do I make MessengerLAN work with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall?
MessengerLAN needs UDP port 8473 manually
opened in XP Internet Connection
Firewall.
More information is at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307554 Specific
instructions for opening a port (in this
case, UDP port 8473) can be found at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;308127
(In step
8, you will type 8473 as the internal and
external port)
(In step 9, select UDP)
Is there any way to copy Groups
definition from one machine to another
within the office?
Yes. The groups definition are stored in
a file in your MessengerLAN directory.
The file name is 'GROUPS.CFG'. Once you
create your sets of users, you can copy
this file to the MessengerLAN directory
of any other MessengerLAN user, and
they'll have the same set of users.
How can I add a blank line to a
message?
To add a blank line just press
Ctrl-Enter.
Why are some MessengerLAN users
in my office missing from my 'Users'
list?
If you see some users, but not others,
there could be several causes:
- MessengerLAN
will only show you those users
who have their computers turned
on. Otherwise, the user name will
not appear at all on the 'Users'
list.
- Some
of the users may not be on the
same LAN as you, or you may be
attempting to connect to users
across the Internet, both of
which are not possible with
MessengerLAN.
- Your
LAN might be configured in
discrete 'subnets', where certain
ports or UDP packets are blocked
from flowing to other subnets.
Please review your LAN
architecture with your systems
administrator.
MessengerLAN
users can see my username in their
Userlist but I can't see theirs. What's
wrong?
Something is preventing UDP packets on
port 8473 from reaching your machine.
This is commonly caused by one of two
reasons:
- There
is a software or hardware
firewall on your computer that is
blocking inbound messages on port
8473. This can be software like
ZoneLabs, Windows Internet
Connection Firewall, Norton
Internet Security or other
products from Symantec or McAfee.
There may be settings on your
computer that are different than
the other computers. All of these
software packages include the
ability to open UDP port 8473.
- Your
computer is attached to a switch
or router port that is setup
differently than the other
MessengerLAN users on the same
router or switch. Make sure that
computer is attached to the same
router as other working
MessengerLAN users. If it is,
switch the router ports between
the MessengerLAN working and
nonworking ports to see if
something in the router
configuration is different
between the two ports.
